We're getting to that time of year where "bugs" start going around, so I thought today I would tell you how you can use the healing properties of "The Original" Himalayan Living Salt to both relieve symptoms, and prevent colds and flu from developing.

These applications are recommended in the book Water and Salt: The Essence of Life by renowned biophysicist Peter Ferreira and Naturopath Dr. Barbara Hendel (see specials below to order).

To prevent and treat colds and flu, drink one teaspoon of sole in a glass of living spring water every morning on an empty stomach. Then drink two to three quarts of low-mineral, non-carbonated water per day. Among other benefits, the sole will supply your body with natural energy, eliminate impurities and stimulate your body's circulation and nervous system--all of which help fight illness. Do this as the foundation of any other treatment for specific symptoms.

If you are already having symptoms, but do not have a fever, take a 1% sole bath in body temperature water for 20 minutes. This will help the body release toxins and absorb energy and minerals from the sole.

If you have a fever, do not bathe. Instead, soak your feet in a 1% sole solutions and use a "salt shirt." To make a salt shirt, dip a clean cotton shirt in a 3% sole solution (2 tablespoons of "The Original" Himalayan Living Salt dissolved in 1 quart of water). Wring excess liquid from the shirt and put it on. Wrap your body in a dry towel and lay in bed, covered with a blanket. After about half an hour you will start sweating. Stay in bed for 60 to 90 minutes. Take off your shirt and shower, then rest for one hour. This is excellent for reducing high fevers.

To relieve a sore throat, gargle with a 1% sole solution. This brings comfort by moistening the infected mucous membrane, loosens bacteria and viruses, and disinfects and regenerates the mucous membrane. Repeat this process several times each day.

To relieve a runny nose or soothe a sinus infection, flush your nose twice a day using a 1% sole solution in a Neti Pot.

To relieve an ear infection, flush your nose twice a day with a 1% sole solution (as described above), and place a heated Salt Sachet on your ear for 20 minutes several times a day to alleviate pain.

To relieve bronchitis, perform inhalation therapy once or twice a day with a 1-3% sole solution or use our Personal Salt-Air Inhaler twice a day. These treatment can work wonders to help your body heal in record time.

There's nothing more nurturing than a bowl of hot vegetable soup on a crisp outumn day or when your body is fighting a cold or flu. Canned and dehydrated soups, however, have some of the highest levels of refined salt. Here's a recipe for a simple vegetable broth you can make at home with "The Original" Himalayan Crystal Salt. It will fill your kitchen with lovely aromas as it simmers on the stove.

This recipe is from my friend Debra Lynn Dadd. She is the author of a wonderful book called Home Safe Home, which shows you how to eliminate toxic chemicals all through your house. Since toxic chemicals damage the immune system, reducing your exposure to them helps strengthen the immune system so it can better protect your body from colds and flu.


makes 4 to 6 cups, depending on how concentrated you make it

2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
1 large onion
2 medium carrots
4 large stalks of celery, plus some celery leaves
8 cups cold water
1 teaspoon "The Original" Himalalyan Crystal Salt

This is for a basic stock. As you please and to your taste, you could also add leeks, winter squash, chard, celery root, mushrooms, herbs, or garlic (garlic is very healing). Save all the stems and outer skins and leaves you would usually discard in the freezer and use them to make stock all winter.

  1. Clean and chop all vegetables, leaving the skins on (they will be discarded at the end).
  2. Melt the butter or heat the olive oil in the bottom of a large pot.
  3. Add the chopped vegetables and salt and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the water and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.
  5. Pour the stock through a sieve into another pot, and continue to reduce until the flavor reaches the richness you desire.
  6. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  7. Serve as a simple broth, or add more chopped vegetables and seasonings to make a chunky soup.

You can also cook this broth until very concentrated and freeze it in ice cube trays to make "boullion cubes." Just remove a few cubes and add them to boiling water for instant soup anytime!
